WA - Has The Nation's Hardest Workers
If you listen to Premier Colin Barnett and acknowledge the spate of studies investigating workplace behaviour and employee attitudes globally, then Sandgropers are the hardest-working bunch in Australia, possibly the world.
"We have not lost our 'can do' attitude," Mr Barnett told a business breakfast meeting. "There's an incredible sense of pride in this state. I wish Australia had a bit more of that attitude at the moment."
That pride is helping to drive the state economy, with Treasurer Christian Porter reporting a $325 million operating surplus for the first quarter of the 2011-12 financial year, a significant turnaround on the $47 million operating deficit in 2010-11.
And the plethora of recent surveys and reports support Mr Barnett's suggestion that WA has the nation's best employees.
"All the statistics show that West Australians work harder, work longer and are more productive than other parts of Australia," Mr Barnett said.
"I think WA is in an exciting time, and I thank you (WA businesses) for what you do in the business community. Keep working hard."
The statistics Mr Barnett refers to may include the global survey of 12,000 people by workplace solutions provider Regus, which found about half of all Australians worked more than eight hours a day and 40 per cent took work home.
Regus regional vice-president for Australia, New Zealand and South-East Asia, William Willems, said local businesses were feeling the pressure even though the Australian economy was showing greater resilience than others.
"They have heavy workloads and they are doing extra hours to meet deadlines," he said.
The Regus survey indicated Australians were working longer hours than people in Britain, the US, Canada and China, but fewer hours than those in France, India and Brazil.
Meanwhile, research from the Stayz "holiday habits report" found that more than 11 per cent of the state's workforce checked their email inboxes while on holiday.
Nationally, 53 per cent of the 3500 Australians surveyed checked their work emails at some stage during their holidays, and nearly 40 per cent did other work as well.
A separate report by Roy Morgan Research found the number of Australians taking holidays was also falling, down from 70 per cent in September last year to 68 per cent the same month this year, meaning we're probably staying in the office longer and relaxing less.
And online travel company Expedia revealed Australians were taking 15 days annual leave a year 1.5 fewer days than last year, with a third of all workers cancelling or postponing holiday plans because of work. The survey found that when Australians took a break, 22 per cent regularly checked in with work.
