Timber Pallets By Aussie Crates

If you’re looking for a reliable, durable and cost-effective packaging solution for the shipment of your goods, then timber pallets are definitely worth considering for the job. Here at Aussie Crates, we can customise timber pallets according to the specific needs and requirements of your cargo. In addition to this, we use the appropriate processes and treatments to protect pallet wood, to ensure that they are adherent to ISPM-15 standards. Indeed, timber pallets are excellent for transporting tools, equipment and machinery in a variety of industries. However, many customers may wonder if timber pallets are safe for reuse in alternative projects. After all, ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ is an important mantra to live by in this day and age. Plus, it also ensures that we can get as much value out of pre-existing materials as possible.

What Makes a Safe-to-Use Pallet?

First off, it’s important to note that not all timber pallets are suitable for reuse projects. So, the first step is to understand what makes a timber pallet safe for reuse, and what signs you may need to look out for that tell you that a pallet isn’t so safe for reuse. Below, we’ve gone through a few tips which will help you to differentiate the good pallets from the less than ideal ones, for use in your next project of choice.

Clean

The most ideal timber pallets for your reuse project would be free from stains and marks. Keep in mind that timber pallets are used by a variety of different industries in order to transport a number of goods. That said, they can be prone to spillages from chemicals or other dangerous materials; some may even be contaminated with bacteria such a E.coli or Listeria if they’ve been carrying organic goods. For this reason, it’s also a good idea to know what your timber pallets have been carrying before you proceed to use them in your reuse project.

Good Condition

Your timber pallets should also be in good condition; that is, have minimal cracks, splinters and other damage as a result of nails and fastenings coming loose. Damaged pallets can be dangerous to handle, especially if you aren’t using gloves. Moreover, they can be unreliable in terms of strength.

Treated

We’d recommend that you use pallets with stamps on them, for example, those that have been treated according to ISPM-15 regulations. Timber pallets that adhere to these standards have been treated with fumigation and heat treatment, so as to prevent the risk of a pests damaging the packaging or the goods stored inside it. Of course, you may also come across timber pallets without stamps, that may have been used for domestic travel. Whilst these types of pallets are most likely safe to use, we’d say it’s better to be safe than sorry and use stamped pallets instead, especially if you don’t know the origin of the unstamped pallets.
