4 Tips for Preventing Mould on Wooden Crates

How to Prevent Moulds on Wooden Crates? For starters, let’s get one thing straight- you’ll never find a spot of mould on the timber crates delivered by Aussie Crates, and that’s a guarantee. In fact, we go above and beyond to ensure that our wooden crates are always treated and stored in the correct manner before presenting the final packaging solution to you, our cherished customers. The problem is, the standards we uphold here at Aussie Crates aren’t exactly commonplace throughout the entire industry. Not all suppliers are the same, and you may find that some of the crates you source from other companies may have already begun to develop nasty furry fungi on its surface, before you’ve even had the chance to pack your cargo within!

Obviously, when discovered, this can become a major concern for you, your business, and whoever is receiving your wooden crates next in the supply chain. Mould doesn’t only act as an eyesore. In addition to this, it can also compromise the items stored within your crates, contaminate production lines and even pose as a health hazard towards workers who are handling your wooden crates. Unfortunately, it’s quite easy for wooden surfaces to develop mould when they’re exposed to particular conditions, specifically when it’s warm out and there’s oxygen and moisture present. When these conditions are met, the mould uses the wood as a source of food.

The good news is, there’s still a way for you to prevent mould from developing on your wooden crates, as long as you ensure to follow the right tips:

1. Store Them Right

The first step to preventing mould growth on your wooden crates is to store them in the correct manner. Make sure to store your wooden crates in an area that is cool with sufficient airflow. That means avoid placing them in the back of closed trailers or in small sheds, where air flow is minimal. This is especially important to follow, as during the day, the temperature outside can rise, consequently trapping the heat inside of these areas. When night falls and the temperature drops, moisture forms inside, creating favourable conditions for the growth of mould. If you need to store your wooden crates in these areas, then you should at least make sure to open the doors so that you can allow for some fresh air to enter in.

2. Keep Them Dry

A short exposure to moisture can be enough to catalyse the growth of mould on your wooden crates. Needless to say, it’s important to dry off any wet wooden crates immediately, so that you can prevent the risk of mould growth tarnishing your packaging products. Make sure to dry off your wooden crates in an area with sufficient airflow. If you’re drying them outside, make sure to place a cover over the crate so that you can prevent it from the harsh damage of the sun.

3. Consider Chemical Treatments

There are also some chemical treatments that exist out there which can help to prevent mould from developing on your wooden crates. These chemical treatments may last anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months. However, depending on what you have stored inside your wooden crates, the use of chemicals may not be deemed suitable by the customer receiving your cargo. For this reason, it’s important to get the ‘ok’ from your customers before proceeding to use chemical treatments on your wooden crates.

4. Trust in a Reputable Manufacturer

The final step is making sure that you’re sourcing your wooden crates from a reputable manufacturer. At Aussie Crates, our wooden crates are manufactured from high quality timber that complies with ISPM 15. Moreover, they are designed with a slatted top, floor and sides to provide excellent air circulation.
